The moment Cupid turned in my direction, I remembered my broken sunglasses and avoided making direct eye contact by ducking my head. “That was the result of another of your runaway arrows.”

Behind me, the door to the back room sprang open, and Mercy ran out, her eyes wild. “No, I missed him!”

“Mercy, where are your sunglasses?” When she looked at Cupid, she seemed to be entirely unaffected. I guessed that answered the question as to whether both of his magical abilities could affect the same person at once.

“They’re in there.” She vaguely indicated the back room, while I darted inside to snatch them up in an attempt to put a shield between me and Cupid’s magic.

Cupid snickered at me. Shoving Mercy’s sunglasses onto my nose, I shot him a glare. “Did you think you were being clever, hitting her with an arrow when my back was turned?”

“What?” Mercy sounded confused. “He didn’t hit me with an arrow.”

I spun to face her. “Wait, did you see who did?”

“I don’t follow.”

“Someone fired an arrow at you while you were outside, didn’t they?”

Her expression clouded. “I don’t remember. I was going to check on that package, and I think I saw someone…”

“Who?”

“Kaitlyn,” she answered. “She looked upset. We talked. Then…”

“Not so fast,” I called to Cupid as he made to slip away towards the stairs. “You aren’t off the hook yet. Mercy, do you remember where the arrow came from?”

“I’m not sure. I do remember thinking that I needed to wait for my EB to come back so I could talk to him and tell him how I feel.”

No, I hadn’t misheard. She really had come up with a cutesy nickname for the Easter Bunny.

“Have you?” Cupid asked. “Told him, I mean?”

“Not properly.” Mercy scowled. “She stopped me.”

“You told me that you wanted to go with a subtle approach, remember?” I couldn’t shut her in the supply room indefinitely, but how was I supposed to keep her out of the Easter Bunny’s way until the effects of the arrows wore off?

“You want his attention?” asked Cupid. “I can give you some tips.”

“Mercy, don’t ask for his advice. He’s a serial heartbreaker.”

At this rate, the latest victim would be poor Daryl when he inevitably showed up to see Mercy and got the cold shoulder in favour of a rabbit instead. I wished I could warn him to stay away from here in the meantime, but he hadn’t witnessed the effects of Cupid’s magic for himself. He wouldn’t have any idea how it made normally rational people completely take leave of their senses.

Cupid sniffed. “That’s hurtful.”

“So is hitting people with arrows. Besides, Mercy doesn’t need your advice.”

“That was kind of mean,” said Mercy.

“He put Kaitlyn under a spell.” And you, I added silently, not bothering to voice the words aloud. Let’s face it, it was impossible to get through to someone who was currently enamoured with the Easter Bunny of all people. “He also caused a pile-up on the ice rink.”

“That wasn’t intentional,” he objected. “And I didn’t fire any arrows.
